The Rick O'Donnell Memorial 5.22 Mile Trail Run and Ultra Challenge will be run on the well marked trails of Greenbrier State Park, Boonsboro MD. The main event will be the single loop, 5.22 mile trail race which starts and finishes along the sandy shores of Greenbrier Lake.
Awards in the spirit of the run will be given to the first, second and third place overall male and female finishers in the 5.22 mile run.
The Ultra Challenge is to keep going and testing your limits after logging the initial 5.22 miles. Complete 5 laps to log a trail marathon finish or 6 (or more!) laps to log an ultra distance finish. The only award you'll receive for completing a trail marathon or the ultra challenge is the self-satisfaction of knowing that you've accomplished something great in remembrance of a great man. Runners will have the opportunity to rack up miles until 4:30 P.M. 8 hours is a hard cutoff with the last loop having to be started before 3:40 unless your previous loop was completed in less than an hour. No exceptions and no whining about this; Rick wouldn't complain or try to bend the rules and you shouldn't either!
Typical aid station food and drink will be provided and a drop bag area (uncovered) will be set up for those forging on to run multiple loops. Since the only aid station on the course will be at the start/finish, be prepared. It is highly recommended for those running multiple loops to carry at least one water bottle.
Runners completing 6 or more laps will have their results forwarded for posting in Ultrarunning Magazine. This is the ideal venue to tackle your first trail marathon or first ultra! Those that tackle "bonus" mileage are encouraged, but not required, to make an additional monetary contribution to the race's cause.
Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club will donate the proceeds from this event, less modest expenses, to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, a research foundation that "Provides help for patients and caregivers, advocates for those afflicted and educates those who don't understand." We will make this donation in the name of Rick O'Donnell, a friend and runner who lost his battle with Bile Duct cancer in 2013.
All runners, regardless of whether they'll be running a single lap or intend on running multiple laps will begin at 8:30 sharp on race morning.
